Eureka resident Roland Pearce took advantage of an opportunity few civilians are offered — and was submerged more than 200 feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Pearce was chosen to join approximately 20 other participants in a “tiger cruise” aboard the USS Rhode Island nuclear submarine from Nov. 19-21.

A tiger cruise is when a warship takes on civilian riders, Pearce said.

Pearce’s son, Jerrod Pearce, joined the Navy three and a half years ago and volunteered to be part of the Navy’s nuclear submarine force.
