The Harry S. Truman Carrier strike group deploys for 7 months.

It will be the first deployment for 70% of the 7,500 Sailors. Wow, do you remember your first deployment?? I hope some of those spouses and girlfriends find their way to this blog.

When the Truman pushed off the pier just before 8 a.m., the ship played the song “American Soldier” by Toby Keith, and there were few dry eyes among those waving goodbye from land.

Michelle Carver was there to catch a parting glimpse of her boyfriend, Seaman Devin Rice. He was gone for the holidays last year, too, she said with tears in her eyes.

“I am going to write to him every day,” Carver said. “Every single day.”
